Mount Rose Summit is located in the Toiyabe National Forest. This section of the Carson Range lies between North Lake Tahoe and Reno. It is directly above the shoreline of Incline Village. The summit region is the highest one that is open year-round. It's 8,900 feet above sea level. In July of 1959, stock footage at the scenic overlook was filmed for establishing shots. The production returned in June of 1961 and 1962 to film new shots of the vista. The east side was used for a few outdoor segments in three's "Gabrielle". Filming was in June of 1961.

The production returned in June of 1965 to shoot more segments for "The Other Son" and "The Lonely Runner". The east summit of Mount Rose is just above Tahoe Meadows, where other filmed segments were shot for these episodes. The steep mountain face above Hwy 431 was used in "The Other Son", where the explosion was set off by the U.S.D.A.

Mount Rose Campground is located directly across the highway from where the explosion was set off. It is situated on the east side of Slide Mountain. It was used for the climax with the explosives and Joe. Right below the campground is a forested clearing down the mountain face. This is where the cast rides up on horseback and looks at the steep mountain face. The climax of "The Lonely Runner" had filmed segments on the east side of the summit. This is where the Sierra begins to display characteristics of the high desert.

Beautiful Crystal Bay, and Stateline Point are the prize in this shot, with the Incline Village golf course, seen in the foreground. The Bonanza 2002 Friendship Convention will take place at the Biltmore Hotel from June 7th to 9th, at Crystal Bay. This famous establishing shot was seen on Bonanza during its main run, through 1968.

DIRECTIONS (From South Lake Tahoe):  Take Hwy 50 north all the way along the east shore until you reach Nevada State Route 28, and take this all the way until you reach Incline Village. To see the Mount Rose Summit/Tahoe Meadows area, stay on Lake Tahoe Blvd, the 28 and a few miles later turn right onto Hwy 431, which will take you to a famous overlook of the lake that was used in many opening shots of the series.

After you pass the entrance to the Diamond Peak Resort, you will climb the steep grade and Tahoe Meadows is off to your right side. There are cross-country trails that are here, so you can enter safely on foot. The Rose Summit area is also on the right side and you will recognize the terrain as it becomes more sparse with juniper pines and mountain firs.
